Mohamed Salah excelled in yesterday’s game. Especially in the second half, when the famous Egyptian striker was involved in all four goals of The Reds, which fell into the Newcastle net. He was also helped by one small detail.
In the first half, Salah failed to convert a penalty kick. His hard shot into the middle of the goal was saved by the Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka.
“I was confused with the first penalty because the goalkeeper was moving and waving and I thought, ‘OK, let’s go through,’ but he managed to catch it perfectly.”
Swapping kicks at half-time by Salah
Speaking to Sky Sports, Salah said he changed his cleats at half-time because he felt he needed a change. “I trained yesterday with the cleats that I didn’t take the penalty with. It’s not superstitious because I play with many kinds of kicks. But if I feel I’m going to play well with my head then, OK, change them.”
And indeed! As if converted, Salah managed to score two goals in the second half, assisted one and set up the other brilliantly. “At half-time I thought to myself: ‘Do you want to go to the national team with this performance?’ So I had to really concentrate, speed up and make a difference, and I did that,” the Egyptian winger continued.
The Reds’ hero didn’t lack courage and stood up to take the second penalty kick at the end of the match. “For the second time I did what I did in training and I did my thing,” Salah finished.
The player himself is already preparing for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which Ivory Coast will host this year. In the first match there, Egypt will play Mozambique on Jan. 14, 2024. In Group B, they will then face Cape Verde and Ghana. Coach Jurgen Klopp will have to do without his key striker for some time.
Thanks to his performance, Liverpool could move to the very top of the English Premier League, where they currently have a three-point lead over second-placed Aston Villa. He took perfect advantage of Arsenal’s double wobble (loss to West Ham and last time in the match against Fulham), which is not having a good season.
On the other hand, The Reds players have not lost for the thirteenth consecutive match and are on a very good path in the fight for the title!
