Apparently, the Champions League can offer no more. The most successful German team in history taking on the best team in the Champions League.
Bayern’s battle with Real Madrid produced four goals, the first scored by the White Ballet. Specifically, it was Vinícius Júnior who opened the scoring in the 24th minute after an assist from Toni Kroos. However, Thomas Tuchel’s charges managed to turn the game around.
Leroy Sané scored in the 53rd minute and four minutes later Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot. The England international, by the way, broke his personal best this season and is also attacking Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga debut.
However, Bayern’s win was snatched away by Vinícius Júnior, who also scored from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute. Munich must therefore win at the Santiago Bernabeu if they want to reach the final. Manuel Neuer, it should be added, would have wanted the German to reach the Champions League final.
The duel between Bayern and Real, however, brought not only four goals and interesting football, but also one historical record. Luka Modric, now a playing legend of the Madrid club, made it happen.
Modric made history in bold letters
The Croatian international became the oldest player to play in a Champions League match for Real Madrid. At the age of 38 years and 234 days, he broke Ferenc Puskás’ record.
The Hungarian footballer had held the record since 17 November 1965, when he made his debut in a White Ballet jersey against Kilmarnock at the age of 38 years and 229 days. Modric broke it in his 528th appearance for the Madrid team, 118 of which were in the Champions League.
Modric came onto the pitch in the 76th minute, replacing the star Bellingham. He also surpassed Roberto Carlos’ 527 games in the historical ranking of players with the most games for Real Madrid. However, the Croatian international’s contract at Real expires at the end of June this year. And if he wants to become Real’s oldest player across all competitions, he has no choice but to extend it.
