Modric: I want to deserve to stay at Real. Not to be given something for free or for what I’ve done here
He will be 38 years old in September, but he is still not thinking about the end of his career. Luka Modric still has strength as a 20-year-old and is hoping for a contract extension at Real Madrid. However, he wants to earn it, not just get it on his name and merit.
He will be 38 years old in September, but he is still not thinking about the end of his career. Luka Modric still has strength as a 20-year-old and is hoping for a contract extension at Real Madrid. However, he wants to earn it, not just get it on his name and merit.
The politics of Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez are relentless. He gives all players over the age of 33 contracts for a maximum of one year, if they continue to perform well, they will earn a contract for another year. He’s uncompromising on this, and that’s why Sergio Ramos, who asked for a two-year contract, eventually left.
Luka Modric, however, will have no problem with that. The Croatian midfielder has been extending his contract year after year for about 4 seasons now and he is perfectly happy with that. And he’s eyeing another summer extension, even though he will celebrate his 38th birthday at the start of next season.
“I want to earn it to continue. Not to be given something for free. I’ve never been given anything in my life and I don’t want it now. If the club thinks I deserve to continue, I would be very happy, but only if I deserve it, but not to be given it for what I have done here,” Modric said in a press conference ahead of the LM semi-final with incredible self-reflection.
“Whatever happens, nothing can change my relationship and my feelings for Real Madrid. It is the club of my life. Whatever happens, nothing can change or destroy our relationship,” the Croatian midfielder added.
Modric has done admirable things at Real Madrid. He has won the Champions League five times, each time being a key player. In addition, he won the Ballon d’Or in 2018.
A new contract should not pass him by in the summer. According to the Spanish media, Modric was supposed to be extended for one more year, but his workload should be reduced a bit due to his age and young faces.
Now he has a chance to add a sixth trophy. Real Madrid will challenge Liverpool in the eight-finals, with the first leg scheduled for Anfield Road tonight at 9pm.
