MMA fighter Hunter Boone suffered a gruesome-looking head injury after hitting an exposed cage mount during a fight.

Hunter Boone suffered the injury in his featherweight bout with Jordan Brown at the Martial Combat League (MCL) event this past Saturday in Oklahoma City.

Boone was reportedly knocked down by Brown in the opening seconds of the fight and hit his head on an unsecured cage mount. The result was a massive head laceration that required 17 stitches. The fighter was virtually scalped.

Coach describes the horrific event

The website My MMA News has been in contact with the fighter, who is resting and recovering after being treated in hospital. Boone’s coach Jason Greer explained how the injury occurred.

“His opponent put a tie on him, and when they hit the fence, Hunter’s head hit the gate. This led to Hunter suffering a 20-centimeter gash on his head,” the coach described the horrific moment to the aforementioned portal.

The MCL organization has disclaimed blame

Though the wrestler slumped to the ground, he had no idea what had happened, according to his words. The referee immediately stopped the match and called a doctor. The MCL released a statement via its Facebook page after the incident, claiming that all proper procedures were followed when assembling the cage.

“We understand and appreciate everyone’s concerns about what happened,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to the warrior who suffered this unfortunate incident,” the organization expressed regret for the unfortunate accident.

MCL, however, refused to accept any blame on the part of the organisation and pointed out that the sanctioning committee had inspected the cage before the fight. Even the sanctioning committee did not find fault on the part of the organisation after the incident. So what is the cause of the injury is unlikely to be known. However, especially for the fighter Boone and everyone present, it was a truly horrific experience.

In the cage, after a status check, the tournament continued. We wish the aforementioned fighter a speedy recovery and hopefully we will see as few moments like this in the cage as possible.
