Arsenal London have signed a new contract with manager Mikel Arteta. The club posted the news on its official website and social media. Alongside Arteta, Jonas Eidevell, who leads the women’s team, has also had his contract extended. Arteta extended his contract with the club until 2025. The management thus expressed satisfaction with his current tenure with the team.
Mikel Arteta has been linked with Arsenal London since 2011 when he joined from Everton. He retired from his football career at Arsenal in 2016 as club captain, having led the team to two FA Cup and Community Shield victories. He gained his first coaching experience under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, where he served as his assistant.
He became Arsenal manager in December 2019, replacing interim manager Freddie Ljunberg, who was put in charge of the team after Unaie Emery’s unsuccessful tenure.
Arteta had a relatively successful arrival at Arsenal. He managed to win the FA Cup and the following summer the Community Shield. His time in the league and in Europe could no longer be considered successful. In the Europa League, Arsenal fell out with Olympiakos of Greece. In the Premier League, despite improved play, he led the team to only eighth place.
The first full season did not go as expected either. Arsenal finished in eighth place and did not even make it to the domestic cups.
This season began with hope and unprecedented spending. During the transfer window, Arteta undertook an extensive rebuilding of the squad.
Players such as goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, defenders Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and creative midfielder Martin Odegaard joined the team. However, coronavirus, inconsistency and frequent injuries have caused Arsenal to have a very poor start to this season.
Despite the growing voices that the Spaniard should be sacked, the board have stood by the manager and expressed their support for him. Arteta gradually incorporated new reinforcements into the first team and managed to lift the team in terms of play and results.
The good form has contributed significantly to Arsenal being favourites to finish in the top four with four rounds to go. The North London derby with Tottenham scheduled for next week will give a hint if Arteta has managed to return Arsenal to Europe.
Arteta has instilled Arsenal with a modern style of play with an emphasis on attractive combination play with construction from the back row, intense pressing and solid defending. From the players he assembled a promising young team full of rising stars like Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith-Rowe, and Aaron Ramsdale. He managed to get the team back to Europe and taught the Canaries to believe in their own abilities again.
The contract extension is a clear message from the London club’s management that they trust Arteta, appreciate his work so far, and support his future moves.
