Celtic will play a Champions League second round rematch on Wednesday at Midtjylland. The loser of this match will face Jablonec in the Europa League preliminary round.
Midtjylland will take the 1-1 draw from the first leg against the Scottish runners-up. They also set themselves up well for the home rematch by beating Aalborg 1: 0 and earning their first points of the new league season.
Celtic can’t be happy with a draw at home. In the preliminary match played on Saturday they scored six times and suffered a 6:2 debacle against West Ham. And the Hammers were without several of their mainstays.
Midtjylland relies on the goals of Sory Kaba, the burly playmaker scored 14 goals last season. Midfielder Evander is the mainstay of the midfield line, he scored nine times and assisted five times last season. He also scored a beautiful goal from a direct kick in the first game.
Young David Turnbull dazzled in the green and white jersey last year, scoring nine goals and adding four assists from central midfield. In attack it was the talented but already experienced Odsonne Edouard who was firing, he managed twenty-three goals at club level last year.
Midtjylland have struggled at the back from the start of the new season, scoring just three goals in their opening three games.
Celtic are struggling defensively again, failing to keep a clean sheet in six of their last seven games.
Given Celtic’s poor form not only last year but also in the second part of the preparation, I think Midtjylland will advance.
