What has been speculated for a very long time has become a reality. Mick Schumacher will not continue in the American Haas stable next season, his place in Formula 1 will be taken by returnee Nico Hülkenberg. What did Schumacher say about his departure from the queen of motorsport?
Hülkenberg is returning to Formula 1, the son of a famous legend is leaving anyway. At least as far as the grid is concerned. Schumacher will join Haas in 2021, along with Nikita Mazepin.
Needless to say, he dominated the Formula 2 championship in 2020 and it was expected what he would show in the queen of motorsport. It certainly wasn’t all glory in its first year, however, mainly due to a monocoque that was far from competitive.
The results from 2021 were therefore not representative, and as far as considerations of staying with the American team were concerned, it was this season that was to be decisive. But it took Schumacher a while to learn how to work with the new-era monopost.
Points in Great Britain and Austria, but also two huge accidents
Schumacher scored his first points at Silverstone, then in Austria, had a great race in Canada and came close to scoring points in the season opener in Bahrain. But Mick also suffered two huge accidents.
In Saudi Arabia he completely blew up his car, and in Monaco he even cut it in half. For a team that turns over every dollar, it was a very difficult situation, as each of his accidents cost Haas a million dollars or more.
From the aforementioned Silverstone onwards, Schumacher also started beating his teammate Kevin Magnussen, but by all accounts Haas boss Guenther Steiner had already made up his mind.
Haas, however, ceased to be a team to attack the points in the second half of this season. The reason? No big upgrades, no money for it.
And so, a few hours ago, official confirmation came out from the American stable that they would indeed be parting ways with Schumacher, and his seat would be taken by returnee Hülkenberg. The latter, by the way, has raced twice this year, filling in for the ailing Sebastian Vettel in Aston Martin for the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Statement from the team boss
“I would like to thank Mick Schumacher for his contribution to the team over the last few years. Although we have decided to go in different directions for the future, the whole team wishes Mick the best of luck in his next steps, both in his career and beyond,” Steiner said in an official statement.
Schumacher also had his say
“This will be my last race for the Haas F1 Team. I will not hide the fact that I am very disappointed with the decision to renew my contract. But I still want to thank Haas and Ferrari for this opportunity. The years spent together have helped me to grow technically and personally. And especially when things got tough, I realized how much I love this sport.
“It’s been bumpy at times, but I’ve improved, I’ve learned a lot and now I know for sure that I deserve a place in Formula 1. This topic is anything but closed for me. Failures will only make you stronger. My fire is burning for Formula 1 and I will fight hard to get back on the grid,” Schumacher said in a statement.
