Mick Schumacher and his future in Formula 1? The German racer is likely to end up at Haas, but where could he head?
What does the future hold for the son of a famous Formula 1 legend? That is the big question at the moment. The connection between Mick Schumacher and Ferrari has been severely weakening over the course of the season, and now it even seems to be over. This collaboration will come to an end after the season, with the young German driver likely to end up at Haas as well. So where will his next steps lead?
What does the future hold for the son of a famous Formula 1 legend? That is the big question at the moment. The connection between Mick Schumacher and Ferrari has been severely weakening over the course of the season, and now it even seems to be over. This collaboration will come to an end after the season, with the young German driver likely to end up at Haas as well. So where will his next steps lead?
Schumacher is currently a member of Ferrari’s driving academy, which he joined at the start of 2019 after winning the European F3 championship the previous year.
However, it has been clear to all involved throughout this season that Schumacher’s relationship with Ferrari has gradually cooled, with his contract with the Ferrari Driver Academy expiring at the end of this year, leaving him a free driver who will be able to move wherever he wants.
Indeed, it is very likely that once Schumacher’s association with Ferrari comes to an end, it will also mean the end of his association with the American Haas team, which works closely with the Italian marque.
In fact, as reported by Motorsport, although Haas has not yet made any official statement about Schumacher’s end, there is clear talk in the F1 paddock that there will be no place for the German driver at Haas next.
According to the latest speculation, this should be taken by former Alfa Romeo driver Antonio Giovinazzi, who is expected to become a teammate of Kevin Magnussen.
So what’s left for Schumacher?
Mick’s future is now very uncertain. He may not be able to get a seat in Formula 1 next year if he does leave Haas. So what realistic alternatives is he left with?
Probably the best hope is a race seat in the Alpine team, where Fernando Alonso will leave at the end of the year and Oscar Piastri has resolutely refused to be a driver in this team. So the French team will have two options to choose from. Either they will engage McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo or just for the future promising Schumacher.
In recent times, even Esteban Ocon, the driver of this stable, has admitted that he would like to have the 23-year-old Haas driver next to him.
Another possibility is AlphaTauri or Red Bull’s sister team. Pierre Gasly is the clear number one in this team, but speculation has also begun about his future and potential transfer. At the Faenza team, however, racer Colton Herta has a better chance of a seat.
The Formula 1 transfer merry-go-round is in full swing and we will have to wait for more information. But one thing is already certain. Whether it’s Schumacher or Ricciardo, one of them will very likely have to get out.
