Mesut Özil currently plays for Fenerbahce in Turkey, where he transferred from Arsenal in January. Today, however, is his big day and everyone must admit that in his prime he was a brilliant footballer whose best season was still in a Real Madrid jersey.
The Gelsenkirchen native was brought to Real Madrid in 2010 by José Mourinho and his brilliant passes benefited Cristiano Ronaldo in particular, who also took his departure to Arsenal in 2013 very hard.
In his very first season, the White Ballet celebrated the Spanish Cup championship and the next season the future world champion already lifted the La Liga winner’s trophy above his head.
At the time, however, he probably couldn’t have imagined in his worst dreams that it would be the last league win he would experience in his life. At least as far as top European leagues are concerned.
But he has already accepted that fact, probably the best German footballer for the 2014/15 season, and let the 2014 World Cup championship or the 4 FA Cup wins be his patch.
But let’s look back at the 2011/12 season, in which Mesut notched 19 assists, which mainly benefited Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 46 goals that season.
Real Madrid also did well in the Champions League, reaching the semi-finals, where they were beaten on penalties by Bayern Munich, who failed to beat Chelsea on penalties in the final.
But it was an incredible season for Özil, one that he certainly still remembers to this day. It’s a great shame that his performance went downhill so quickly after that, as technically the German midfielder was really top class and those are really beautiful to watch.
In the current season then, Mesut has already played 9 games in which he scored 3 goals and also notched up an assist. Thanks to him, Fenerbahce is leading the Turkish league by one point over Trabzonspor.
