Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? A question that has been debated for many years. And also a question that legendary coach Arséne Wenger has faced recently. His answer has won him the approval of the football public.

On Monday night, the FIFA The Best Awards took place and the category for the best footballer of the past year was won by Lionel Messi, the recent world champion and a man who, even at 35, shines not only in the Argentina jersey but also in the PSG jersey.

The winner of seven Ballon d’Ors has added another valuable individual trophy to his collection. He won this award for the second time in his career, finishing ahead of his teammate Kylian Mbappé and Real Madrid star Karim Benzema.

Messi’s long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo was understandably absent from the nomination. Moreover, he didn’t even vote; Pepe had the honour for Portugal.

However, the fact that Messi won the award has reignited the debate about who is the best footballer in history.

During the gala, the legendary Arséne Wenger, former Monaco and Arsenal manager, among others, had to answer this question. However, he very cleverly avoided a specific answer.

In the first place, he highlighted how much they both did for world football and that it was actually a miracle that both players stayed at the top for so long.

“When neither of them are here, we will only realise what they have given us. Both of them. I always refuse to pick out which one is better. They are two completely different players. Completely different, but completely special. For 15 years they have shown the world how great football can be,” Wenger expressed.
