The upstart Parisian giant had another task ahead of him on Saturday. After the national break, they welcomed Nice, the former team of current PSG coach Christophe Galtier, to the Parc des Princes.
As is the case in virtually all matches, the reigning French champion was the clear favourite. Stars like Lionel Messi and Neymar were in the line-up. However, Kylian Mbappé was unexpectedly absent from the bench.
Galtier thus clearly listened to the wishes of national coach Didier Deschamps, who publicly declared during the national break that the jewel of French football should rest more. The reason is, of course, the upcoming World Cup.
However, at least in the first half Mbappé’s absence did not bother anyone. He was replaced by the talented Hugo Ekitike. And PSG did well. It was better, and Messi in particular showed how comfortable he is now.
He was also the one who opened the scoring with a wonderful strike. In the 29th minute, he set up the ball for a direct kick and gave Kasper Schmeichel, the Nice goalkeeper, no chance. The former Leicester England number one could only watch the ball fly into the net.
Messi proved once again that there is no better direct kick executor in the world today. His goal was applauded from the bench by the aforementioned Mbappé. And no wonder. The Argentine’s goal was really worth it!
