PSG received a wave of criticism after Wednesday’s defeat to Manchester City. In particular, the offensive trio of Messi, Mbappé and Neymar have had their fair share of criticism. However, at least the first named immediately showed his genius in the upcoming match, when he passed for three goals.

PSG lost to Manchester City 1: 2 on Wednesday. It was therefore expected to make up for its taste in the league at the weekend, when it played at the ground of the last Saint-Étienne. But things didn’t turn out so easily.

Once again, the trio of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar featured in the starting line-up. However, apart from one of this trio, it was not a great performance. Moreover, the Parisians were down 0:1 from the 25th minute.

Fortunately, they had Messi in the line-up, who before the end of the first half served the ball from a standard situation straight to the head of Marquinhos, who equalised at 1: 1.

It’s worth mentioning that PSG played the entire second half outnumbered as defender Timothee Kolodziejczak was sent off. The wait for the next goal was still quite long. After a brilliant pass from Messi, Angel Di María scored to make it 2-1.

But to make matters worse, Messi also notched his third assist when he again found the head of Marquinhos in the set-up, who rounded off the scoring to make it 3:1.

Apart from the assists, however, the Argentine struggled throughout the game. He burned a great chance. Overall, it was not a performance worthy of the French league hegemon. But it’s the result that counts.

The big loss, however, may be the injury to Neymar. The question is how long he will miss.
