Does the idea of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the same team seem like science fiction to you? Maybe it is, but according to Spanish newspaper AS, that’s exactly what FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta will try to do.
The arrival of Joan Laporta as club president has brought a new spark to FC Barcelona. How bad the financial side of the Catalan club was surprised the new president. For months he has been looking for ways to refinance the club’s debt and he is very close.
However, while the club’s accounting department is working against the clock, Laporta continues to look for ways to ensure Barça is competitive. So far, the president has brought Agüero, Eric García and most recently Memphis Depay to the club.
He is also in talks to extend the Argentine star’s contract, as it expires on June 30, 2021. By all accounts, the two sides should come to an agreement soon. The agent and father of Lionel Messi in one person, Jorge Messi, is now expected to be in Barcelona working out the last details regarding salary and bonuses.
The amount of Messi’s salary is expected to be significantly reduced. Although the thirty-three-year-old Argentine has various offers on the table that would up to triple his current salary, the Rosario native wishes to stay in Barcelona.
As Messi’s future seems to be slowly being resolved, Joan Laporte has let his imagination run wild and has started thinking about a deal that seems impossible.
In fact, Laporte dreams of bringing Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo together at Barcelona. In addition to his closest associates, Laporta began mapping out a move that would go down in football history. That would be to build a team that boasts two stars that have dominated more than the last decade of football.
It is not known whether Ronaldo would say yes to such a proposal. His agent Jorge Mendes has not yet formally conveyed the offer to him. Under Laporta’s bold plan, Barça would offer Juventus up to two of its players.
It would be one of the foursome of Antoine Griezmann, Sergi Roberto, Miralem Pjanic and Philippe Coutinho. Exactly how Barça would pay Ronaldo is yet to be worked out, but if transfer talks start to take place, it’s understood that the Blaugranas may propose a loan deal and use the wages freed up by the two players going to the Old Lady.
Although it would be a costly deal, research has shown that Barça’s revenue would double if Ronaldo and Messi were in the same team. Laporta’s idea was met with enthusiasm from those around him.
It would be a long journey, but even thinking about putting Ronaldo and Messi together is a stroke of genius. It would also be a huge boost for LaLiga itself.
What about you, would you like to see these players in the same team and do you think it’s even realistic?
