The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team did not have an ideal start to the new Formula 1 season, but after several grand prix races the situation is starting to improve. Furthermore, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff recently confirmed that the stable is planning major upgrades for the British Grand Prix.
The German team was only fourth fastest in the grid at the start of this season, at least according to Lewis Hamilton. In the opening three Grands Prix, Mercedes scored 16, 22 and 18 points respectively.
In Azerbaijan and Miami, Hamilton and George Russell scored just 20 points each time, and the poor performance of the Mercedes cars meant that a change had to be made.
After almost a year and a half, Mercedes abandoned its technological concept with zero sidewalls and brought almost a complete novelty to Monaco. We covered these significant changes in detail in a previous article.
Does the revolution work?
In any case, it’s safe to say that the revolution at Mercedes has worked. Although the Hamilton-Russell pairing scored twenty-three points in Monaco, the most of any of the first six races, the result in Spain was all the more positive.
At the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit, Hamilton finished second and Russell third, so both Mercedes drivers were on the podium. And the Canadian Grand Prix also looked very solid, especially after Saturday’s qualifying.
Although it should be noted that Hamilton and Russell finished first and second in the second practice session. The Silver Arrows had the second row at the start of the Canadian Grand Prix, but Russell did not finish the race due to technical problems.
However, the seven-time champion was awarded third place and therefore another podium finish. With a total of 167 points, Mercedes moved up to second in the Constructors’ Cup. Although the German team still has a lot to work on, the current monoposto offers a lot of room for development.
Big changes at Silverstone
Mercedes is not exactly slacking off in its development, also taking this season as preparation for next year. In any case, team boss Toto Wolff has already confirmed that they will bring a big package of modifications to the Silverstone circuit for the British Grand Prix.
“We will bring a major upgrade package to Silverstone. The knowledge of our car has got a lot faster. We should make solid steps forward in the next four races. We understand the simulations better, which correlates with what we see on the track,” Wolff said in an interview after the Canadian Grand Prix.
“That’s been our problem for the last year and a half. Anyway, we see that we are able to make performance improvements thanks to the wind tunnel. We understand better what the car needs to go fast, what the set-up needs to look like,” he added.
F1 now has four races before the end of July, before the mandatory summer break. The Austrian Grand Prix will take place in late June/early July, followed by races in the UK, Hungary and Belgium.
