Sergio Ramos is a very reliable penalty taker. But his name will forever be associated with a major failure. Against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final, he sent his penalty kick into the stands and became the butt of many jokes.

Memorable Moments is a special project by Ruiku that commemorates the most iconic moments that have happened in football. Today we look back at Sergio Ramos’ missed penalty.

25. april will mark exactly 11 years since Ramos’ worst career penalty. And also since Real Madrid’s huge disappointment.

Los Blancos lost the first leg at the Allianz Arena 1:2, won the home leg by the same scoreline and took the game to extra time. No goal was scored there, so it went to penalties.

And the penalties were pretty wild. David Alaba and Mario Gomez for Bayern converted, but Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka for Real Madrid did not and the visitors led 2: 0.

But then Toni Kroos and Phillip Lahm scored tries, Xabi Alonso reduced it to 1: 2 and Sergio Ramos had the chance to level the score at 2: 2.

But the worst possible thing happened. The motivated Real Madrid stopper dribbled, then ran again and sent the penalty high over the crossbar, estimated to be in the 30th row.

Bastian Schweinsteiger converted the decisive penalty to send Bayern into the Champions League final. Ramos’ penalty then became a hit on the internet and the subject of several funny videos and collages.

The cruel Champions League

It was a huge blow for Real Madrid at the time as they had been waiting 10 years for a trophy from the most prestigious competition. Before the home rematch, they were very excited and determined to finally reach the final, only to be punished by penalties.

A year later, at the same stage, Real Madrid suffered another cruel end. In their first match at Signal Iduna Park against Borussia Dortmund, they lost 1:4, only to be 2:0 up in the return leg and needing one more goal to advance. But Los Blancos threw away huge chances and eventually crashed out.

The royal club did not see the end of the 2013/14 season. That’s when they reached the final in Lisbon, where they faced city rivals Atlético. Things looked bleak again, with the Rojiblancos still leading 1-0 in the set-up. But at 92::48, Ramos sent the match into extra time with a header, starting the Real Madrid era. They subsequently won three more trophies in four years.
