Memorable Moments is a special project by Ruik that recalls the most iconic moments that have happened in football. Today we look back at Hakan Calhanoglu’s direct kick.
The Turkish footballer started his career in Germany. He moved from Mannheim to Karlsruhe, where he started his professional career in the 2011/12 season. He made 16 starts in the second Bundesliga, but did not avoid relegation.
In the following season, he tried his hand at the 3. Bundesliga as an 18-year-old, where he scored 17 times in 27 matches and earned a transfer to the top-flight Hamburg.
And it was a great transfer. Hamburg pulled the 19-year-old from the third league, the offensive midfielder scored 11 goals and added 4 assists in his first season.
Including one sumptuous goal that went down in history as one of the best in the entire Bundesliga.
It’s February 2014, Hamburg are second to last in the table and have won seven games in a row. With Dortmund coming to the HSH Nordbank Arena with Jürgen Klopp battling Bayern for the title, the favourite was clear.
But it is the home side who take the lead thanks to a header from Czech midfielder Petr Jiráček. Lassoga fried the visitors even more in the second half, increasing the lead to 2:0 after a breakaway. But that was not all.
Hamburg had a direct kick just outside the circle in the attacking half, which every team plays, because it’s so far away that it’s not even worth centering into the penalty area. So Dortmund didn’t even put up a wall and just waited for the opponent to play the ball.
But Hakan Calhanoglu got to the ball and fired it straight at goal from 41 yards. Roman Weidenfeller did not count on it and the shot ended up in the net.
However, after watching the replay, it has to be said that Weidenfeller was somewhat innocent. The shot floated in the air several times and finally took a sharp turn to the side just in front of him. Fantastic shot from Calhanoglu.
The Turkish midfielder didn’t last long in Hamburg either, moving to Leverkusen after one season, where he lasted three seasons. Then came a transfer to AC Milan, where he moved to their biggest rival, Inter Milan, after four years.
