It’s been 13 years since Real Madrid midfielder Guti produced one of the best and most beautiful assists in football history. Many have tried to emulate him since, but there is only one original.
Memorable Moments is a special project by Ruiku that commemorates the most iconic moments that have happened in football. Today, we look back at Guti’s foot.
31. on January 1, 2010, the Real Madrid star traveled to La Coruña, where he was met by an unpleasant opponent. Los Blancos had not won at the Estadio Municipal de Riazor since 1991. That’s how strong the local Deportivo was then.
Moreover, Real Madrid were eight points behind leaders Barcelona at the time and desperately needed a win to stay in contention for the title.
Moreover, in this expected and big match, Los Blancos had to do without their biggest star, Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Even a small child knows that the title is at stake today. It’s a match to the death,” the biggest Spanish daily MARCA headlined at the time.
Real Madrid took the lead in the first half through Esteban Granero, but Manuel Pellegrini’s team increased their lead just before half-time. But in what way, fans around the world marvelled.
Kaka sent on Guti, who found himself face to face with the goalkeeper. There was no question if the Real Madrid midfielder would shoot, everyone thought it was a no-brainer when he was on the penalty spot and only had the goalkeeper in front of him. But Guti shocked everyone with his tackle.
He showed that he has eyes in the back of his head too, sending the goalkeeper to the ground and challenging Karim Benzema to score with a brilliant tap-in. He had no problem sending the ball into the open net.
One of the best assists in football history was known in Spain as ‘El tacón de dios ‘, the ‘divine heel’.
Benzema added a second goal in the second half and Real won 3-1. But the game will forever go down in history as Guti’s heel.
