Memorable moments: Agüerooooo or One of football’s most famous turnovers

You don’t have to be a Manchester City fan or even like Manchester City. However, if you say “football’s most famous turnover”, you probably think of the Citizens’ match against QPR in 2012, when Sergio Agüero became immortal for Manchester City fans.

Memorable Moments is a special project by Ruiku that commemorates the most iconic moments that have happened in football. Today we look back at Sergio Agüero’s decisive goal.

The fight for the title

It’s the last round of the 2011-2012 Premier League season. The title fight will be fought out between the Manchester teams, with the Citizens hosting QPR at home and United travelling to Sunderland.

Both teams have the same number of points, but Citizens have the better record, so if they win at home against QPR, regardless of the result of the opponent, they will be Premier League champions. For the first time in 44 years.

Everything went well at the start. Samir Nasri spurned a great chance, but the Citizens didn’t have to worry too much because Pablo Zabaleta opened the scoring in the 39th minute.

But in the second half, there was a shock. In the 48th minute Djibril Cisse equalised at 1-1 and in the 66th minute Jamie Mackie shocked the Etihad Stadium. He sent QPR into the lead and suddenly the Citizens had the coveted title between their fingers.

The game ran into the 90th minute and Citizens were still losing. They spasmodically raced for an equaliser, but it was not to be. Moreover, the news swept through the stadium that Manchester United had won 1-0 at Sunderland and would be champions for the time being.

A historic comeback

But the Citizens weren’t giving up. In the 92nd minute Edin Džeko gave hope and the whole stadium was on its feet again. Manchester City continued to press, relying on one last chance.

And it did come. Agüero took the ball in front of the whitewash, collided with Balotelli, crossed the ball over a player in the box and made history with a shot to the front post at 93:20.

“Manchester City are still alive here… Balotelli… Agüerooooooooooooo! I swear you will never see anything like that ever again. So watch it, drink it in,” Balotelli… Agüerooooooooooooooo! I swear you’ll never see anything like that again. So watch it and suck it up,” Tyler yelled.

The whole stadium went into ecstasy and the Citizens enjoyed their first title in 44 years. Sergio Agüero made his mark on the club’s history.

And not just that, but the Premier League. Many consider this moment to be the most memorable in the Premier League.
