Will we see a unification mega-fight for the king of heavyweight boxing?
It looks like we’re finally going to see the anticipated mega-fight of the modern era of boxing. Although there has been some doubt in recent days as to whether the fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk would even happen, things got underway yesterday.
On the one hand, heavyweight boxing world title holder and undefeated titan Tyson Fury, who has done everything he wanted to do in the boxing world. Last year he announced his retirement from boxing, but after a while in civilian life he sensationally announced his return to the ring.
One of the motives of the “Gypsy King” could be a unification fight for all the belts of the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO. These are in the possession of the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk, who has not yet known the bitterness of defeat.
Tyson Fury gave his opponent a clear ultimatum
In recent days, the world’s media have been discussing the two boxers’ financial rewards. While the Ukrainian side demanded a 50-50 split and was even willing to lower his demands to 40 per cent of the total package, the British legend posted his latest offer on his social media yesterday.
“Listening to all the talk about the fight, that Usyk wants 50 per cent and that Tyson is greedy,” Fury said on his Instagram. “Usyk and his team don’t deserve more than 30 percent, I stand by that. Take it or leave it. Take on Daniel Dubois (the next mandatory challenger according to the rankings) and fight for a few plums.“
“But if you want to make royal money, fight the Gypsy King. From now on, for every day you stall the fight, I’ll deduct one percent of the 30 percent. How on earth did you think you’d get half. Impossible. Tick tock, tick tock,” he gave a clear ultimatum.
Oleksandr Usyk accepted the challenge, but with a respectable condition
The answer didn’t leave a long time to wait, and it must be added that the Ukrainian boxer has gained huge sympathy from boxing fans. “I accept your offer for 30 percent,” Usyk said on his Instagram.
“But you promise to donate 1 million British pounds to Ukraine immediately after the fight. And for every day you’re late, you’ll pay another 1 percent to the Ukrainian people. The Ukrainian boxer added his condition for the fight.
The two boxers were originally expected to clash in Saudi Arabia. But in the end, the duel was to be staged at London’s Wembley Shrine, which can hold over 90,000 fans. The date has already been set for April 29. Let’s hope Fury accepts Usyk’s respectable terms and we finally get to see the denouement of this story.
