Daniil Medvedev had a great start to the ATP Finals, alongside the home team’s Yannick Sinner. He secured his qualification from the group and set himself a clear goal in the final match of the regular phase of the prestigious event. Why and how does he want to emulate Novak Djokovic?

Two matches, four sets won and not a single loss. That’s the brief record of world number three Daniil Medvedev at this year’s Nittto ATP Finals in Turin.

The Russian tennis player took on his compatriot Andrey Rublyov and Germany’s Alexander Zverev. The latter showed great form on serve on Wednesday, but Medvedev was the more confident player in the decisive moments. He deservedly secured his second win to advance to the semi-final stage of the tournament.

The Moscow native has lost his serve only once so far in the ATP Finals and has been showing excellent form for some time. He has reached the final three times out of the last five events.

Medvedev is taking his cue from Djokovic

In the final red group match, the winner of five tournaments this year will face another big name. His opponent will be Carlos Alcaraz. And he needs to win badly.

Although Meddy can afford not to win, he knows he can’t go into the fight at half throttle. Any slacking off would cause him to lose his rhythm and that could be critical before the most important fights.

He has his role model in this in Novak Djokovic, who was in a similar situation in last year’s match against Medvedev. In the end, it was the Serbian tennis player who dominated the long match.

“I think this is the right example for me to do my best on Friday and try to win,” Medvedev said before ending his run in the regular stage of the ATP Finals.

In conclusion..

Medvedev is clearly one of the most successful tennis players this year. After all, he managed to win the tournament even on his much unloved clay court.

He has four more triumphs. And his opening matches in Turin certainly suggest that everyone needs to keep an eye on him.
