The biggest star in combat sports is setting the stage for a spectacular comeback. Conor McGregor may not be able to fight under the UFC banner just yet, as he’ll have to meet USADA’s anti-doping requirements before that, but he already knows at least one other opponent and has outlined his ambitions.
And what’s the deal with the anti-doping program anyway? Much has been made of the fact that McGregor must be placed on a testing program for up to six months before a potential fight. But in the Irishman’s case, it’s different. According to him, two clean tests are enough, he has already communicated with USADA about everything.
Other fighters don’t like that. Again, they feel that the former two-time UFC champion enjoys different, special rules and conditions. Only, USADA has denied communicating with McGregor, so we still don’t know exactly how it will be.
The Irishman will then be absent from Saturday’s event in London, where the trilogy between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman will be completed in the main event. Usman will go into the match unusually in the role of challenger and slight underdog after turning the match around with a terrific high kick in their last encounter.
And it’s the main event of the UFC 286 gala that McGregor is interested in. Because he would like to challenge the winner. “Yes, I would like to win the welterweight title. That’s what I want,” he let slip in an interview with Ariel Helwani for MMA Fighting.
But before he wants to fight for the title, he’ll have to earn it. He has to beat Michael Chandler. While it’s not officially known what weight they will fight at, it’s not out of the question that the fight will take place at welterweight.
Apparently, the duel with McGregor will not be opposed by the lightweight king Islam Makhachev, already a former ward of Khabib Nurmagomedov. It would be a spicy battle. The Dagestani himself says he will fight whoever the UFC puts in front of him. But he wants McGregor to beat Chandler first.
