Rennes seems to be an enchanted city for PSG. The long-time most successful French side last won on the Breton club’s soil in 2018 and Sunday night extended the wait to break the negative streak. Kylian Mbappé contributed with a scorching chance.
It was September 2018 when PSG won 3-2 at Rennes. However, that was the last time so far. And not only have they not won since then in the team from Brittany, but they have only once out of four games played at least a draw.
On Sunday, the Parisians wanted to break the negative streak and it was expected to happen. The home team entered the match weakened by the absence of several key players, but even that did not help Mbappe and co. to gain points.
Rennes won 1: 0 and kept up with PSG in all aspects except ball possession. Shooting was even more dangerous. It had more shots on target.
At least with one point, the Ligue 1 leader could have easily left. Mbappé, who came on during the second half, had a 100% chance on his foot after a wonderful pass from Lionel Messi.
The Argentine sent his French teammate’s pass on a run behind the opposition defence and Mbappé went at the goalkeeper alone. The way he handled the situation certainly didn’t live up to his reputation as a fearsome goalscorer.
But it’s good news for fans of the French league. Ligue 1 is getting more dramatic with PSG’s loss and the situation at the top of the table looks very interesting. PSG leads with 47 points, but only three points less than second-placed Lens and five points behind their rivals Marseille.
Rennes are among the teams holding the cup places with the win. They can enjoy fifth place, which guarantees qualification for the Europa League.
