Mbappé the star of Leipzig? Unthinkable today, 6 years ago a contract was almost signed

Kylian Mbappé is one of the biggest stars in the world today. He gradually developed into one in the jerseys of Monaco and PSG, where he is still active today. But his entire career could have taken a very different turn. Six years ago, he was close to leaving for ambitious Leipzig.

It was 2015. The hugely ambitious and hated in Germany RB Leipzig were starting their second season in the second league with a clear objective. To be promoted to the elite. And they did. But beyond that, the club’s management tried to lure talented and young players to the team.

One of them was the then only 16-year-old French youngster Kylian Mbappé. Leipzig’s sporting director at the time, Ralf Rangnick, even visited Mbappé’s family in order to be able to recruit the talented footballer.

Rangnick was convinced that the Frenchman fit Leipzig’s style of play. He believed Mbappé had a really bright future ahead of him. But he didn’t convince his family.

Why didn’t the deal happen? Rangnick said that the player’s father in particular was against it and would only let his son go on one condition. He wanted Rangnick to become a coach. Then, with his eyes closed, he would have been willing to agree to young Kylian’s departure to Germany.

But he didn’t. Rangnick didn’t become head coach until six months after that effort. In the meantime, Mbappé signed a professional contract at Monaco.

In addition, clubs such as PSG, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea became interested in Mbappé. Leipzig was therefore easily lost among such giants.

Eventually, Mbappé moved to Paris in the summer of 2017, who acquired him permanently a year later. In their jersey, for now, he is fulfilling his enormous potential and is one of the best players on the planet.
