The first Champions League knockout stage match between Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid was decided in the last minute by a brilliant moment from Kylian Mbappé.
Tuesday night was all about the first Champions League semi-final match between the two giants of world football, hosts Paris Saint Germain and visitors Real Madrid. In the knockout stage, one probably could not expect any offensive whirlwind and the expectations of a tactical battle in the match took a realistic form.
A great performance by Mbappé
Real Madrid came to Princes Park primarily to defend in a deep block and to duplicate the attacking efforts of the home side’s biggest star, Kylian Mbappé. However, he showed from the very first minute that the home defence would have their work cut out for them that evening.
Although it looked for a long time that the two teams would eventually share the points, in the last minute of the match Neymar combined in a safe area for the Spanish team with Mbappé, but the latter flashed a truly brilliant moment. He broke through two players into the visiting team’s penalty area and with a ground shot, he finally shot past the rock-solid Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Mbappé’s post-match interview
Mbappé decided the match and was rightly the star of the match. “Of course we are very happy. We wanted to be ready for these big games because we always dream about these games,” gushed Mbappé, who especially appreciated the great fans.
“I was totally confident and self-assured when I scored my goal. The striker is always the master of the situation when the defenders back off,” he described the action at the very end of the game. “I decided where I wanted to go and put it between Courtois’ legs,” he described the fantastic goal that decided the first eight-legged battle.
Mbappé’s performance is all the more piquant given the fact that the cannonballer’s possible transfer to Real Madrid has been a hot topic since the summer. “Sometimes you ask too many questions, we say too many things,” he touched on the subject of the transfer. “Now I’m a Paris Saint-Germain player and I’m happy. I have given my best, I show it with my actions on the pitch and I will have to do the same in the rematch,” he put an end to the speculation for now.
Paris Saint-Germain deservedly won by the narrowest of margins, 1-0, to take the advantage into the rematch in Madrid. This will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium on 9 March.
