Last May, Kylian Mbappé extended his contract at PSG and gleefully took a photo with boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi and a jersey numbered 2025. He was supposed to extend his contract until this year, only in reality the contract is one year shorter with a possible option.
It was a big saga last year. Will Kylian Mbappé stay at PSG or will he leave for Real Madrid? Waited for with open arms in Spain, the 24-year-old Frenchman finally took the generous offer from his Qatari owners that made him the highest paid player on the planet.
Boss Nasser Al-Khelaifi triumphantly presented him in front of a packed Parc des Princes with the 2025 jersey. According to PSG, he has signed a contract until this year, but according to the L’Equipe newspaper, things are actually different.
Mbappé has in fact signed a two-year extension, until June 2024. However, there is an extension option for the next season, until 2025, but only Mbappé himself can exercise it.
And according to L’Equipe, the French striker has four months to decide whether to extend his contract for another year.
If he doesn’t decide to do so, his contract expires in 2024, which would allow him to negotiate and sign a new contract valid from July 2024 as early as next January.
The PSG offices are very busy right now. Al-Khelaifi has let it be known that there is no possibility of the 2022 World Cup top scorer leaving Paris for free.
But if Mbappé does not exercise the option, the only way for PSG to monetise their star would be by selling him this summer.
The Paris native is already the top scorer in the club’s history at the age of 24. He scored the number 200 goal on Sunday, giving him the same number of goals as Edinson Cavani, but he will surely take the lead soon.
