Fifty-three-year-old Italian Binotto has reportedly stepped down from his position as Ferrari boss after a very turbulent season indeed, according to Racing News 365.
Speculation about his departure from the Maranello stable has been echoing across the world’s media for a long time, and now it seems that internally everything is really done. Italian media outlets Sky Sport and Corriere della Sera are reporting that Ferrari will officially announce on Friday that the two parties have parted ways.
A great start to the season, but then…
Ferrari had a great start to the season, with a double in the Bahrain Grand Prix. In Saudi Arabia, Leclerc finished second, Sainz third, so Ferrari once again had both drivers on the podium.
Then, at the Australian circuit in Melbourne, Carlos Sainz made a big driving mistake, after which he retired from the Australian Grand Prix.
Monaco’s Leclerc, however, won the third race of the season and led the drivers’ championship with 71 points. Notably, two-time champion Max Verstappen was only sixth at the time, 46 points behind the top spot.
But then came a series of reliability problems, strategic errors and mistakes by the drivers themselves. Not only Verstappen, but also Red Bull eventually outperformed Ferrari in both championships.
The Italian team had to settle for second place in the Constructors’ Cup, Leclerc finished the season second in the Drivers’ Championship and Sainz fifth.
As a result, Ferrari chairman John Elkann is believed to have lost confidence in Binotto, leading him to tender his resignation after 28 years with the Italian team.
The only question is who will replace him. However, the latest speculation is about Frédéric Vasseur, who is the boss of Alfa Romeo. And this is after Ferrari boss Andreas Seidl turned down the job at the helm of McLaren.
