Matthijs de Ligt wants to leave, Juventus CEO confirms. But who will be willing to pay 90 million euros?
Matthijs de Ligt apparently hasn’t found his promised land at Juventus and the Turin outfit are looking to sell him before risking him leaving for free. That’s a fairly logical reasoning when Ajax paid over €85 million for him three years ago. But who is willing to pay such a sum for a stopper?
Matthijs de Ligt apparently hasn’t found his promised land at Juventus and the Turin outfit are looking to sell him before risking him leaving for free. That’s a fairly logical reasoning when Ajax paid over €85 million for him three years ago. But who is willing to pay such a sum for a stopper?
Maurizio Arrivabene, Juventus CEO, was very clear about the situation in an interview with Italian daily Tuttosport. It’s not always about money. When someone wants to leave, you don’t just say ok, go.”
Juventus, of course, will want their investment back at the very least. After all, we are talking about a 22-year-old stopper who can be a leader and is already putting in great performances. He was one of the Old Lady’s highest rated players last season.
De Ligt has played 117 games for the Turin club so far, scoring eight goals and adding three assists. He has won three trophies with Juventus so far – for the Italian League and Italian Cup winners, and also celebrated his triumph in the Italian Super Cup.
The most serious candidate? Bayern Munich
According to Germany’s Sky Sports, the Munich outfit will make an offer of €75m + €15m in potential bonuses. Hasan Salihamidzic in particular is working on this offer, having reportedly already held talks with de Ligt regarding a possible move to the multiple Bundesliga champions.
Kerry Hau’s tweet also carries a lot of weight, suggesting that other clubs were also in play. However, the player himself is reportedly only interested in going to Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, coach Julian Nagelsmann is counting on the stopper duo of Lucas Hernández – Dayot Upamecano, who will be backed up by the “talented youngsters” Chris Richards and Tanguy Nianzou if needed.
Of course, you have to take the phrase talented youngsters in quotation marks when Upamecano is only 23 years old and if de Ligt were to really come in, we’re talking about another 22-year-old stopper.
But the current Bayern coach, who is 34 years old, is not afraid to work with young players and neither is the club’s management, according to all available information.
However, if the Dutch stopper does indeed transfer to Bayern Munich, then adding Sadio Mané, Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui to the mix is a huge boost to an already strong squad.
Keep Robert Lewandowski and we would have a very hot candidate to win the Champions League next season.
