Mathieu van der Poel has extended his current contract for another 3 years
The Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel is another cyclist who has successfully made the transition from cyclo-cross to road cycling, like the Czech cyclist Zdeněk Štybar or the former ski jumper Primož Roglič. He extended his successful cooperation with Alpecin – Deceuninck for another 3 seasons until 2028.
Van der Poel said that this is a logical choice. He has been riding for this stable since 2014 and has therefore experienced all his successes with them and has had a great transition from cyclo-crosser to road cyclist, mainly focusing on one-off classics and has had many great successes on them.
His successes have been on cycling monuments
He already has 4 wins in his collection at cycling monuments. Twice he has won the Tour of Flanders. In addition, he also won the prestigious Paris-Roubaix (incidentally, another cyclo-crosser Zdeněk Štybar won this race) and Milan-San Remo.
Van der Poel is already a six-time cyclo-cross champion. He won the Elite category for the first time in 2015, then reigned in 2019-21 and added further titles in 2022 and 2023. He completed his successful transition in 2023, when he also reigned in the road race at the World Championships, beating all the specialists. He managed to reign on both fronts in one year.
He started this season with a 10th place in the Milan-San Remo classic, where he fended off attacks from Tadej Pogačar very well and rode through the finish line for later winner Jasper Phillipsen. His versatility is also underlined by the gold at the European Championships and the bronze at the World Championships for bikers.
His other achievements include winning the Amstel Gold Race and the Brabant Arrow in the same year. Roman Kreuziger also triumphed here once. But van der Poel has also done well in Grand Tours.
In the three-week stage races he managed to finish 57th in both the Giro D’Italia and the Tour de France. Overall, he has already collected 9 classics wins and 4 of them are from monuments. His most successful Tour of Flanders, where he hasn’t finished worse than 4th since 2019.
