MMA career of Matej Peñaz is not very long. The 25-year-old fighter has only six professional fights under his belt, but he won all of them convincingly and now he has a chance to fight for a UFC contract. What is his story in MMA?
Matej Peñaz only switched to professional MMA at the end of 2020. Until then, he did kickboxing, muay-thai or K-1. But today we’ll take a look at his MMA career.
Peňáz made the switch to MMA in 2020 when he accepted an offer from Octagon for Project Underground, which was run in the form of a pyramid. This stand-up tournament really suited him.
He won three fights, but didn’t win the imaginary title as he got injured and didn’t enter the finals. Still, he impressed the promoters and got a contract for a classic MMA fight.
He made his debut at the Oktagon 18 tournament, which took place on November 21. That’s when he delivered a KO to Patrik Jevické and it was certain that this fighter would entertain the fans of the organization.
This was followed by the January Oktagon 21 tournament where he defeated Romain Debienne by TKO also in the first round. He then defeated Carlos Graca in the same round at Oktagon 24 and Mateusz Strelczyk at Oktagon 28.
His first fight that didn’t end in the first round was at Oktagon 30.
Koné did fall, however, in the third round. Peñáz scored his fifth and last KO to date. In his sixth and last fight he won “only” on points.
Giovanni Mellilo was very unpleasant, he was constantly provoking Peñáze, but even so, at the end of the fight it was clear who the referee would award the victory to.
Peñaza then got an offer that was hard to refuse. As part of Dana White’s Contender Series, he will have a chance to fight for a contract in the famous UFC.
His opponent will be Sedriques Dumas. If he makes it, there is no doubt that Dana White will give him the contract. In that case, we would have to wait a while for his fight in the Czech Republic.
He was supposed to make his debut at the Oktagon boxing tournament, but he got injured shortly before that and now he is getting himself in shape to be ready for quite possibly the biggest challenge of his career.
