Chelsea made it through the home game against Manchester United. They were 2-0 up, 2-3 down, but took the lead back in the second half. The hero was Cole Palmer, who scored a hat-trick. The Blues jump two points behind the top seven in the cup.
Chelsea took the lead from the first big chance of the game, a deflected ball into the net by midfielder Conor Gallagher. Then the defending players on both sides pulled up, first stopping a shot from Mykhailo Mudryk, then Alexander Garnach.
Further complications for Manchester came in the 18th minute when winger Anthony was fouled in the whitewash. Cole Palmer, a reliable enforcer this season, took the ball and shot to the right post, giving Andre Onan no chance.
In the 34th minute, Chelsea got their opponents back into the game themselves, with winger Garnacho reducing it to 1: 2 after a defensive error. Two minutes later it could have been two goals again, but Enzo Fernández only let Onana stand out.
In the 39th minute, on the other hand, it was equalised as the Portuguese cooperation worked. Diogo Jota’s header was cleared by Bruno Fernandes. Gallagher could have restored the Blues’ lead in stoppage time, but only hit the right post.
After the change of sides, Harry Maguire had a solid chance, but his shot was just wide of the target. Chelsea were slightly more active but didn’t take advantage of the dangerous chances. A totally inaccurate pass by Gallagher in the 66th minute started the turnaround.
After the ensuing clearance, the Red Devils set up a breakaway which Garnacho finished with a header past goalkeeper Dorge Petrovic. Manchester then played the game with experience and did not allow Chelsea’s offensive players any chances.
However, Dalot fouled in the penalty area and a penalty was whistled. Palmer took the ball again and converted with a shot to the left post. And after a corner in the 99th minute, he scored a hat-trick. Manchester remain in sixth place after a 3-4 defeat. Chelsea are in 10th place, just two points behind the top seven.
