Masters: Scheffler goes for broke, Woods on the swing. Cink plays an ace!

Augusta National Golf Club in the state of Georgia has completed the second round of the Golf Masters, thus the famous tournament has broken its halfway mark. The tournament has a new leader by five shots. Apart from the machine play of Scheffler, we also got to see the first hole in one, and Justin Thomas also played an excellent round.

The second round was played in difficult weather conditions. The sun was still shining at Augusta in the morning, but in the afternoon it started to cloud up. But one factor was bothering all the players. The gusting wind was vicious and in the air often unexpectedly determined the direction of the ball.

Still, two players played a round of 67. Justin Thomas had a downright good day as he went from a score of +4 after the first round, to a current -1, currently tied for tenth place.

Scottie Scheffler made the cut with the same feat. The only difference is that he has already played an excellent first round. With a total score of -8, he leads by a full five shots. No one else in the history of the Masters has built up a bigger lead, and American number one Scheffler has equalled the record.

It’s worth noting that in this case, such a player has always gone all the way to the green jacket in the end. This will be a huge challenge for the next chasers. But as the experts say, the Masters is decided on the back nine of the final round.

It must have felt like a roller coaster ride for Tiger Woods. His start to the second round in particular went badly wrong, as he collected four bogeys in the first five holes. Then he managed to regain some composure. He more or less alternated between birdie and bogey, and in the end the current score of +1 after two rounds is quite acceptable.

Louis Oosthuizen didn’t make it to the second round. He played +4 in the first round, but eventually withdrew due to injury before taking to the course on Friday.

The shot of the day was clearly scored by American Stewart Cink, who played hole in one on hole number 16. It was the twenty-fourth ace on that hole in Masters history.

The second round out meant a split between those who will head into the weekend rounds and those for whom this year’s golfing holiday is already over. Some very surprising names also remain on the outside looking in.

For example, Padraig Harrington (+5), Brooks Koepka (+6), Justin Rose (+8) and shotmaker Bryson DeChambeau, who leaves Augusta after the second round with a terrible score of +12, are all out of the third round.
