Marrakech will host the tenth race of this year’s Formula E season

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has announced that the Moroccan city of Marrakech has won the right to host the tenth round of this year’s Formula E World Championship. The eighth season of the electric formula series therefore returns to the originally planned number of sixteen races.

The E-Prix Marrakech returns to the Formula E World Championship calendar after a two-year hiatus.

The race replaces the E-Prix in Vancouver, which was to be the first ever event in the series’ history. Alleged disagreements with the city council and promoter mean Vancouver will not feature on the FE calendar until next year at the earliest.

Marrakech will host a Formula E race for the fifth time in its history, following the debut of the E-Prix in 2016 and subsequent races in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Portugal’s António Felix da Costa will defend his victory from the last Formula E visit to Morocco.

The eighth season in Formula E history will most likely keep to the originally planned sixteen races thanks to the return of Morocco to the calendar. No further changes to the calendar are expected.

The Marrakech race is preceded by the E-Prix in Berlin this weekend. A double race will be held at the Templehof airport there, firstly on Saturday in the traditional anti-clockwise direction and then on Sunday in the opposite direction, i.e. clockwise.

Stoffel Vandoorne, driver of the Mercedes EQ, leads the drivers’ standings with 81 points after his victory in Monaco. Second in the overall standings is current double series champion Jean-Éric Vergne with 75 points. Mitch Evans is in third place after his double victory in Rome and currently has 72 points.

Among the teams, Mercedes and DS Techeetah lead the way with 120 and 105 points respectively. Meanwhile, the French stable is still waiting for a race win, while Mercedes has the first places from the opening round in Diriyah and the just-mentioned Monaco.
