World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka was hailed by many as the new queen of the WTA rankings before the season. But her performances so far have not matched it.
At the Australian Open, she twice slipped away with luck after three sets, her serve absolutely went. In the second round against the Chinese Wang Xin she made twelve double faults in the first set and lost 1::6. She then picked herself up again and won 6: 4 and 6: 2, despite making seven more double faults.
“Based on what I know about her stage fright, she should pack up and go home and work on herself instead of being in Melbourne,” former US tennis player Pam Shriver assessed Sabalenka for ESPN.
Marketa Vondrousova, on the other hand, is in great shape. First she defeated Priscilla Hon 6-2 and 6-3, in the second round she knocked out Liudmila Samsonova 6-2 and 7-5.
Sabalenka hasn’t faced really strong opponents yet, with Sanders and Wang Xin ranked 128th and 100th respectively in the WTA rankings. Given her shaky form, Vondrousova should be able to handle her.
