The season is far from over for Markéta Vondroušová. She entered the last major tournament of the season together with Karolina Muchova. While Muchová dropped out in the first round, Vondroušová managed to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament.
From April to October, Markéta Vondroušová was absent from the circuit due to a wrist injury. After her return, she managed to win two ITF tournaments, and in Shrewsbury, England, she scored her first singles triumph in five years.
She managed to break into the top 100 of the WTA rankings again and is now trying to achieve another success, this time at the indoor event in Angers.
In the second round, Vondroušová (97th) faced Bulgaria’s Tomova (90th), but she did not give the Czech player much trouble. Although the native of Sokolov lost her serve three times in the match, she soon regained it and won the match in two sets 6:2 and 6:2.
Unfortunately, the tournament ended in the first round for Karolina Muchova (154th), who had the match with Clare Burel (125th) in her hands for a long time. At 6::2, 5::4 she had a match point on her racquet, but she was unable to convert it and her opponent eventually took the set in a tiebreak.
In the last deciding set, the Moravian player was again leading 2: 0 in games, but Burelova turned the situation around and finally decided in her favour 3-6.
Muchova ended the year outside the elite 100 for the first time in three years, with a negative score of 11::12. She was hampered by injuries throughout the season, but her biggest success this year was certainly her victory over world number six Maria Sakkari at the French Open.
Vondrousova’s quarter-final match at Angers is scheduled for tomorrow when she faces the winner of the match between American Parks (100th) and Romania’s Cristiano (151st).
