Karolína Plíšková went the furthest at the Australian Open, falling to Magda Linette in the quarterfinals. At the French Open, Karolína Muchová was the most successful, playing the final against Iga Swiateková.
At Wimbledon, Markéta Vondroušová was the highest ranked player. Before the start of the tournament she was 42nd on the WTA ranking with 1106 points. Before the start of Wimbledon, however, she probably didn’t expect herself to get that far.
Since 2018, she has always won at most one match on grass. That has now changed in Berlin, where the native of Sokolov beat both Andreescu and Niemeier.
In the first round of the most famous tennis tournament, the draw was favourable for the 24-year-old. Vondrousova met Stearns, whom she defeated in 89 minutes after 6:2 and 7:5 sets.
In the second round, she found a recipe for Veronika Kudermetova, who was playing the role of the tournament’s number twelve. The left-handed tennis player won after sets 6:3 and 6:3. Subsequently, she also defeated Donna Vekic without any major complications.
In the eighth round there was a duel of tennis players from the Czech Republic. Bouzkova had a better start, winning the first set 6:2. However, Vondroušová’s performance improved rapidly in the next ten minutes and she could deservedly celebrate her progress.
In the quarter-finals she was very close to elimination, as Pegula was already 4:1 up in the deciding set and even had a break point opportunity. But she was unable to take advantage of it, which in hindsight turned out to be the key moment of the whole match. Vondrousova finally won the last set for herself with 6: 4.
Thanks to this, she is going to move up significantly in the WTA rankings. If she had not made the semi-finals, she would have moved up to 24th place and would have had 1886 points to her credit. If she wins, she would have 2406 points and would be ranked 16th.
If she were successful in the final, she would have 3106 points and could move up to tenth place. But to do that, she would also need Madison Keys not to advance to the final. Vondrousova would also improve on her career best, which is 14th place from July 2019.
