On Thursday afternoon, Markéta Vondroušová played the second singles semifinal of her career at a Grand Slam tournament. On the centre court of the All England Club she faced Elina Svitolina, whom she managed to beat twice 6:3. She advanced to the Wimbledon final.
42. in the previous rounds, the world number one player successively eliminated Peyton Stearns, Veronika Kudermetova, Donna Vekic, Maria Bouzkova and Jessica Pegula.
The Ukrainian, who is returning from childbirth, was also in very good form at Wimbledon this year. From the position of 76th in the WTA rankings, she went past Venus Williams, Elise Mertens, Sofia Kenin, Victoria Azarenka and also world number one Iga Świątek.
The balance of their matches before the final clash was in Svitolina’s favour at 3:2. The last two matches, however, were better managed by Vondrousova, who won in the quarterfinals of the clay Masters in Rome in 2020 as well as in the Olympic semifinals the year before.
The opening set of their opening duel on grass went well for the native of Sokolov, thanks to her opponent’s lost serves. The 24-year-old Czech used a total of three break points on her way to a 6:3 partial win, the last of which was also a converted set point. Svitolina’s break in the sixth game was of no consequence.
Vondroušová was better from the beginning of the second game and after twenty minutes she led 4: 0 thanks to two more break points. In the following game, however, she struggled to defend her own serve, which she ultimately failed to do.
The increased number of errors on the Czech side and the improved performance on the Ukrainian side made the set more dramatic. However, Svitolina’s serve did not start to improve enough to turn around the unfavourable score from her point of view.
Vondrousova also took the second set 6: 3 and celebrated her progress to the Wimbledon final. We will get the answer to the question if she can win it on Saturday afternoon, unlike the final event of the French Open 2019.
She will face the winner of the match between Ons Dzhabur and Aryna Sabalenka for the biggest achievement of her career in the form of winning one of the most valuable trophies in sport. It is already certain that the silver medallist from the Tokyo Olympics will make a significant move in the singles rankings. Currently, according to live-tennis. eu, she would be ranked 16th.
Elina Svitolina also secured a big jump in the rankings with her semi-final appearance. She should move from 76th to 27th.
