Marcos Rojo: Solskjaer told me that Maguire had to play because he cost a lot of money. But he played sh*t!
Former Manchester United stopper Marcos Rojo has spoken very harshly about Harry Maguire. He has no appreciation for his former teammate, nor for coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Former Manchester United stopper Marcos Rojo has spoken very harshly about Harry Maguire. He has no appreciation for his former teammate, nor for coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Argentine Marcos Rojo joined Manchester United in 2014 from Sporting Lisbon. He was supposed to be a big boost to the defence after a successful 2014 World Cup.
And in his first three seasons he was actually quite a confident stopper, featuring more or less regularly in the starting line-up, but from the 2017/18 season he dropped out of it completely.
After that, he still came back and performed quite decently in cups as well, but the preference was given to the expensive Leicester signing Harry Maguire. And Rojo couldn’t stomach that.
“I played very well in the Premier League and in the European Cups. But I was very angry with Solskjaer. He put Maguire ahead of me. Fortunately, he has now been sidelined and Lisandro Martínez is playing in his place,” the 33-year-old stopper began sharply in an interview with TycSport.
“I came to the coach’s office and told him I either want to play or let me leave. Solskjaer told me he had to put Maguire in because they gave big money for him, so he had to play anyway. And I replied.
He also experienced José Mourinho in Manchester, whom he remembers a bit better. “He’s a great coach, but a bit of a nutter. He used to tell Mkhitaryan he had to press like Mickey Mouse, and he would mimic his movement. I was clamping my mouth shut and laughing about it,” Rojo said.
The Argentine defender left Manchester United for good in 2021 and returned to his native country to play for Boca Juniors.
