Marcelo Bielsa is very close to a new engagement. He should become the new coach of the Uruguay national team, which was left by Diego Alonso after the World Cup.
Diego Alonso was the last Uruguay coach who could use the services of legends Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani at the World Cup. But betting on matadors did not do the team much good and they dropped out in the group stage.
Thus, Alonso quit the team after the championship in Qatar and the blue and white national team has not yet introduced a new coach.
Now, however, he is reportedly very close to an interesting name. According to TyC Sports, Marcelo Bielsa is expected to become the new coach of the national team.
According to TyC Sports, negotiations are in the final stages and Bielsa is expected to sign a contract until the end of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, and if he advances, he would lead the team at the championships in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
the 67-year-old coach last led Leeds United, who he pulled up to the Premier League. However, he was sacked more than a year ago and has not returned to the bench since.
Although he has been linked with several Premier League teams or Athletic Bilbao, nothing has materialised and he is expected to eventually take over in Uruguay.
It would be Bielsa’s third time leading the national team and the third time in South America. He led Argentina from 1998-2005 and was the coach of Chile from 2007-2011.
In Uruguay, he would be facing a young team in the making, with stars from Real Madrid (Fede Valverde), Barcelona (Ronald Araújo) and Liverpool (Darwin Núñez).
