Eight-time world champion Marc Márquez will take part in the Austrian Grand Prix next weekend, but only as a spectator in the factory Honda garage. The twenty-nine-year-old Spaniard continues to make optimistic progress following his latest surgery two weeks ago.
Márquez has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation in recent months after the humerus bone in his right hand, which he injured in a crash at Jerez during the first race of the 2020 season, failed to heal properly.
After the Italian GP in May, he decided to withdraw from MotoGP races to undergo surgery on his humerus. During the healing process, however, it rotated 30 degrees more than it should have. Since then, he has not appeared in the paddock of any of the subsequent grand prix. In fact, he has decided to fully recover from his injuries at home in Spain.
With his return to the world of grand prix racing imminent, Márquez will rejoin his Repsol Honda team at the Red Bull Ring this coming weekend. He will do so to try and understand the behaviour of this year’s bike, what exactly is going on with it and what can be improved for next season.
“Honda is in a critical moment and I’m talking a lot with my team to try to understand this year’s bike and what’s going on,” explained Márquez. “That’s why I’m going to Austria to talk to everyone and also to meet the Honda staff that I want to work with for the future.”
Márquez went on to reflect on his rehabilitation process so far and admitted that he is feeling optimistic. With the latest successful procedure, he hopes he can return to fitness before his crash at Jerez 2020.
“Step by step I feel better. The bone is healing well, which is the best news of all,” Márquez continued. “I have another medical check-up at the end of August. After that, we can take the next step with rehabilitation and really start pushing and building muscle.
“But I can’t have another surgery. I am convinced that the last one was good, but these are the thoughts in one’s mind.”
