Manchester City defended their league title, but failed to do the same in the FA Cup. In a repeat of last year’s final, the Red Devils lost to Manchester United 1-2.

Manchester City wanted a penalty in the first minute after a tackle on Erling Haaland, but the referee did not call it. Alejandro Garnacho had the first shot in the ninth minute, but goalkeeper Stefan Ortega made the save.

In the next ten minutes, Phil Foden scored on one side and Scott McTominay on the other. While the Citizens’ Englishman missed the target, the Red Devils’ Scottish all-rounder challenged the defender in front of him.

By the 30th minute, the Reds were already celebrating, winger Garnacho having an easy job after a mistake by the opposition. And nine minutes later, the favourite got a second slap, Kobbie Mainoo succeeded with a ground shot after a pass from Bruno Fernandes.

Kevin De Bruyne was especially active at the end of the first half, but he didn’t capitalise on anything and United went into the booths leading 2: 0. The outsiders managed to start the second half as well, with the first opportunity being thrown away in the 54th minute by Foden, who missed the ball well.

Two great chances followed in quick succession for the Citizens’ strikers. First Erling Haaland hit the crossbar with a fierce shot in a difficult position, then Julian Alvarez missed punishingly alone in front of Andre Onana.

After that, however, the Red Devils again took the game into their own hands, thanks to good saves by Onana, they got out of the pressure and Citizens were not downright dangerous. But Jeremy Doku scored the contact goal in the 87th minute and the drama continued.

Citizens never got any more pressure and after winning 2-1 they will play in the Europa League next season.
