Sunday’s derby at the Etihad Stadium was the highlight of the 28th round of the English Premier League, in which Manchester City won 4-1 against Manchester United. Legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane also commented on United’s performance. They did not spare their club at all.
Even before the match, Manchester City was the clear favourite. It had a 19-point lead on Manchester United and the Citizens’ goal is to win the championship title. The Red Devils, on the other hand, are fighting for at least the top four spot in the Champions League.
The result and especially the performance given by the United players did not leave two legends of the club cold. The Irish midfielder Roy Keane, who played 326 league games for United and won seven league titles, described the performance in the derby as disgraceful.
“The worst thing you can say about United is that they gave up, ” Keane told Sky Sports. The beauty of top sport is there’s nowhere to hide. You have players who don’t perform and players who don’t run back. They stop running and give up. I don’t get it.”
Former United defender Gary Neville, who won as many as eight championship titles with the club, also left no thread dry on the performance and players. He described their performance in the derby as embarrassing, adding that they threw in the towel after the third goal.
Manchester United did not create any chances in the second half when they should have been fighting for the result. He had only four touches of the ball in the opposition’s sixth-man box and only 21% possession.
Keane then went on to assess the match, saying that United’s performance was so poor that “five or six players” should never play for the club again.
In contrast, he was able to praise City’s performance. “City are a fantastic team, that’s why they are champions. They didn’t even have to give their best performance. They still had a few more gears to go.”
As you can see, United’s problems are probably deeper than that. The problems in the cabin are leaking out, the team doesn’t have the character it used to boast. Also, the search is still on for a manager to lead the team in the next term. But it all takes time and United are losing ground in the top four.
