Manchester United finally got the better of Sheffield United and after a 4:2 win they take an important 3 points in the table. However, Erik ten Hag’s squad did not give an optimal performance at all and for a long time it looked like a shameful result. 1. half-time
The beginning of the match was in the spirit of ball possession for the home team. The Red Devils often combined only in the middle of the pitch and did not get many opportunities. Especially the offensive players lacked movement.
The first chance came in the 23rd minute when Alejandro Garnacho clashed with Fernandes and got the ball in front of the visitors’ goalkeeper. However, Wesley Foderingham made a great save to keep the game tied.
In the 35th minute, the score changed for the first time. André Onana committed a gross error in his crossing and Jayden Bogle punished it uncompromisingly. Unexpectedly, Sheffield were 0-1 up at Old Trafford.
In the 43rd minute, Harry Maguire ran onto Garnach’s centre and headed home the equaliser. It was Maguire’s second consecutive game in which he scored. He also scored against Coventry at the weekend.
The next Garnacho – Foderingham mini-match came in the 45th minute. The Argentine winger again got a great opportunity, but the visitors’ goalkeeper again kept out the shooter.
2. half-time
The visitors entered the 2nd half better. After a messy situation in the home team’s penalty area, Brereton Diaz broke through and the lead was back on the visitors’ side. A few minutes later, however, the referee harshly penalised a foul on Maguire in the penalty area and Fernandes equalised from the penalty spot to make it 2-2.
The Portuguese midfielder directed the turnaround in the end. First, with a beautiful shot in the 81st minute from outside the box, he split the net behind Foderingham. Then, in the 85th minute, he sent the ball beautifully from the first touch to Rasmus Hojlund, who completed the final score of 4:2.
Garnacho had one more chance late in the match, but this time he did not challenge the visiting goalkeeper. Manchester United, with a squad limited by injuries, took an important 3 points in the fight for the final 6th place.
