He still refuses to leave for Manchester United and wants to stay at Camp Nou. Frenkie de Jong has started the new season with Xavi’s team. Going to the most prestigious league competition in the world is a big attraction for any player, but the Dutch midfielder is resisting the offer to head to Old Trafford. What are his reasons?
He bought a house in Pedralbes
He recently bought a house in one of the best and most expensive neighbourhoods in Barcelona. Frenkie de Jong made this investment for one simple reason. He is convinced that he will be in the Catalan capital for many years to come.
His fiancée is happy in Barcelona
Mikky Kiemeney is overjoyed on the Mediterranean coast. Moreover, the couple recently got engaged while on holiday in the USA. They both feel great in Barcelona and have many friends here. Barcelona is a very attractive place to live and rainy Manchester doesn’t sound entirely appealing to the young couple.
He wants to play for Barcelona
His childhood dream was always to play in the Catalan capital. Moreover, he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his great compatriots like Johan Cruyff or Ronald Koeman. That alone makes his arrival in Barcelona a dream come true. It would be hard for him to say goodbye at the age of 25, if only because he has no relationship with a city and a team like Manchester.
A season without the Champions League
Manchester United will not play in the Champions League next season. Understandably, de Jong wants to play against the best and doesn’t want to lose another year in the Europa League.
English weather
The weather in Catalonia is pleasant for most of the year and there are far more rainy days in England. Interestingly, when journalists asked about going to Bayern or United last year, Frenkie’s father first pointed out the terrible weather. Manchester is also a far less attractive city to live in than Barcelona.
Adapting to the game
De Jong is often accused of finding it difficult to find a suitable position for him at Barcelona. He has had a much easier time in the past with Ajax and now in the Dutch national team. However, the 25-year-old is confident that he will be able to adapt to what Xavi asks of him. He has spoken about this with the coach on numerous occasions.
Salary
Frenkie will earn good money at Barcelona. Other clubs will hardly offer him better conditions. So the midfielder doesn’t have to look for ways to get more money. Moreover, in the next seasons he is supposed to receive the deferred salary from the previous years. The coming seasons could mean that De Jong earns up to 27 million euros.
Contacts between Barcelona and Manchester
The player himself also regrets that all the negotiations took place behind his back. The contacts between the clubs were mainly due to pressure from Ten Hag, who want the midfielder at any price. De Jong’s agent, on the other hand, has not yet negotiated anything with Manchester.
