Manchester City face more than a hundred allegations of breaches of financial fair play in the Premier League, which will begin a long-awaited hearing next week. This legal process, dealing with the allegations against Manchester City, will take up to two months, with both sides presenting their arguments and evidence.

  • Allegations relating to financial fair play in the Premier League
  • Threatened with points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League
  • A decision from the commission is expected in the spring of 2024

Possible sanctions for Manchester City

If the commission finds Manchester City guilty, the club could face serious sanctions. It could face a points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League. Points deduction is the more likely option, but expulsion from the league remains a last resort.

What is Manchester City accused of?

The Premier League alleges that City broke the rules over the course of nine seasons from 2009 to 2018. The charges relate to failing to provide accurate financial information and incomplete reporting of one manager’s remuneration.

The Premier League also claims the club failed to comply with UEFA’s financial fair play rules for five years.

Timeframe for the hearing and decision

The hearing before the independent panel will take around two months, during which time the Premier League and Manchester City will present their legal arguments.

The commission will then carefully consider all 155 allegations and the evidence presented. This process may stretch over several more months, with a decision expected no earlier than spring 2024.

Manchester City’s response

The club reacted with surprise in February 2023 when the Premier League announced the charges. The club said it had submitted extensive evidence and was cooperating fully with investigators.

“We are surprised by the release of these alleged breaches of Premier League rules, particularly given the extensive involvement and the vast amount of detailed material we have provided,” the club said in a statement. “We look forward to bringing this matter to a close once and for all.”
