Pep Guardiola has been waiting 12 years for the Champions League trophy. He has only won it at Barcelona. At Manchester City, he has put together an excellent squad that is one of the main favourites. But he faces a huge obstacle.
The Citizens will face Bayern Munich, a team that is also very well put together and has the highest ambitions. The duel is all the more spicy because Guardiola has managed the Bavarian side in the past. Moreover, Bayern are now led by Thomas Tuchel, who can be described as a Manchester City specialist.
Guardiola sees Tuchel as his friend and one of the best coaches of today. He says he is always learning something new thanks to him. And it was the German strategist who dealt the Spanish coach the death blow in the Champions League final in 2021. He was in charge of Chelsea then.
Overall, in the time Tuchel coached the Blues, he managed to beat the Citizens in three out of five duels. And at Bayern, he will be looking to build on that record. And that they have strength in Munich? The previous round with PSG proved that, as they didn’t even match their star offensive trio.
Bayern kept a clean sheet in seven of their eight Champions League games. It silenced the aces of Barcelona, Inter Milan and PSG. Only the players of Plzeň have been successful. Manchester City, who destroyed Leipzig in the previous round, are not so sure of their position as favourites.
The match will be decided by the smallest details. When Tuchel was at Chelsea, not many goals fell in the measurements of his team’s strength with the Citizens. They were tactical battles, four out of five duels ended with one of the teams winning only 1:0, the only exception being the duel that ended 2:1.
Goal throws are probably not too much to expect now either. The first match will be extremely important, so for some time both teams will rather just get a feel for each other and will not want to make a mistake. Bayern in particular will want to rely on strong home form.
So the safest bet seems to be on goals. There is a decent odds of 1.51 on the game not seeing even four goals. In case you decide to bet on the fact that not even three goals will be scored, you can enjoy attractive odds of 2.26.
