Manchester City scored four goals against Brighton, Foden scored twice
Brighton & Hove Albion are struggling with a rather large squad. Pervis Estupiñán, Evan Ferguson and Billy Gilmour, in addition to players who have been injured for a long time, were unable to take part in the match due to health reasons. The team from Manchester was missing “only” Erling Haaland.
29. thursday’s Premier League round of fixtures saw Brighton take on Manchester City. After one goal from De Bruyne and two from Foden in the first half, Álvarez came through in the second half. After the 4-0 away win, the defending champions are only one point behind first-placed Arsenal, who played one less game than them.
Brighton & Hove Albion are struggling with a rather large squad. Pervis Estupiñán, Evan Ferguson and Billy Gilmour were unable to take part in the match due to health reasons. The team from Manchester was missing “only” Erling Haaland.
Welbeck sent the first shot on target in the third minute, but Ederson was able to deal with his weak cross. On the other side, after a quarter of an hour of play, Aké narrowly missed the target.
In the 17th minute, the score changed. After Walker’s centre from the right, Kevin De Bruyne put in a header in the middle of the box, but goalkeeper Jason Steele couldn’t react in time.
Late in the opening 20 minutes, Dunk didn’t head as well after a corner, so the quick equaliser didn’t come. Álvarez did not increase Manchester’s lead as he narrowly missed the target from just outside the sixteen.
In the 26th minute, Phil Foden played in a direct free kick and succeeded. So Brighton were soon down 0:2, also because of Groß’s run. Eight minutes later, Foden got the ball again after an extra time mistake, and with a precise shot to the far post and his second of the game, he made it 0:3 for the Seagulls.
Their coach Roberto De Zerbi made two substitutions at the break. Adam Lallana and Joël Veltman were replaced by Simon Adingra and Odeluga Offiah.
However, neither the picture of the game nor the scoreline changed. Álvarez scored twice before the hour mark. First, Steele saved and then the Argentine striker headed over the crossbar.
In the 62nd minute, however, Julián Álvarez came to the rescue when he calmly slid the ball into the net after Walker’s pass. The Citizens’ fourth goal stood despite the fact that the assisting player appeared to foul the goalkeeper in a sliding collision.
The home side at least tried to ease their deficit, only for Welbeck to shoot too high in the 75th minute. Ten minutes later, Pedro failed from close range. A breakaway Doku from the opposing team also failed to beat the goalkeeper in the set-up. The result was 0:4 at the Amex Stadium.
Manchester City are currently second in the Premier League table with one point behind. However, Pep Guardiola’s charges have played one game less than both leaders Arsenal and third-placed Liverpool, who are two points back. Brighton are in eleventh place.
