The Premier League champions have won the race to sign one of the world’s most exciting strikers on a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City unveiled Erling Haaland after he completed his long-awaited £51million transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
The Premier League champions confirmed in May that one of world football’s most in-demand strikers would be joining them.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich were among the suitors for the 21-year-old striker, but Haaland chose Manchester City.
His father Alf-Inge played for City in the Premier League in 2000-03 and Erling has been a fan of the club since he was a child. He posted photos on social media showing him wearing a City jersey as a young boy.
“It’s a proud day for me and my family. I have always followed City,” Haaland said. “You can’t help but admire their style of play – it’s exciting – and they create a lot of chances, which is ideal for a player like me.”
Haaland, who along with Kylian Mbappe is regarded as one of the best young players in the world, has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium. City have activated the exit clause in Haaland’s contract with Dortmund and appear to be acquiring the super-talent very cheaply.
“We have been watching Erling for a few years now, so we are delighted to bring him here to Manchester City, ” said Txiki Begiristain, the club’s director of football.
Haaland scored 20 goals in 21 appearances for the Norwegian national team and scored 86 goals in 89 games in two and a half seasons at Dortmund. Prior to that, he was at Molde in Norway and Salzburg in Austria. The goal is clear: to lead Pep Guardiola’s team to the Champions League title for the first time next season.
