Atletico failed to make the Champions League quarter-final return leg and after a 0:0 home draw and a 0:1 defeat in the opening game, they are out of the competition. Citizens will face Real Madrid of Spain in the semi-finals.

Atletico started sympathetically, but the first shot was taken by the visiting Ilkay Gundogan, who narrowly missed the back post from outside the box. Kevin De Bruyne fired in the 26th minute, but his shot was blocked by the Red and White defence.

Five minutes later, Gundogan had a great chance, but the German midfielder’s shot was stopped by the left post. The third fifteen minutes did not offer any more chances, so the game was scoreless.

Immediately after the change of sides, Antoine Griezmann shot, but his attempt was knocked down for a corner. The Athletic team stepped up and started to get angry, the first to express this was Griezmann again, who narrowly missed the goal from a volley.

Rodrigo de Paul then shot from the edge of the box, but he didn’t get the ball between the three posts either. The home team pressed, even had more possession in the second half, but they suffered from inaccurate finishing.

In the 85th minute, Matheus Cunha could have scored in extra time, but the Brazilian striker’s shot was stopped by the blue wall.

The final minutes offered only a scramble after an unnecessary tackle by Felipe, who also saw a second yellow card, and a great chance in the 12th minute, which the home side failed to take.
