Manchester City won their Champions League quarter-final rematch after a 3-0 home win to draw 1-1 at Bayern Munich. Erling Haaland opened the scoring and Joshua Kimmich equalised from the penalty spot.
The Citizens took the first step towards promotion when they held off ten minutes of pressure from the home side. Bayern threatened from the wings, but never got on the end of it. And when he did have a chance, he blew it.
In the 17th minute, Leroy Sané ran in alone but missed the target with his left foot, confirming his poor shooting form. Jamal Musiala was also unsuccessful, heading high over the bar from a good position on the edge of the box.
In the 35th minute, Dayot Upamecano, the underdog of the first match, played his hand in the whitewash and Citizens could have taken the lead. The in-form Erling Haaland took the ball but his rasping shot flew over the crossbar.
Bayern’s two chances closed the first half, with Kingsley Coman throwing away the home side’s best opportunity so far.
After the sides changed sides, Munich missed several chances, with Coman failing in the 55th minute and the Citizens making the decisive break. A collaboration between Kevin de Bruyne and Haaland was finished with a shot under the crossbar by the latter.
Joshua Kimmich could have given the home side hope, but his shot from outside the box was saved by Ederson. The Brazilian goalkeeper made a similar save in the 67th minute when striker Choupo Moting tried his luck.
It was not until the 82nd minute that Bayern broke down the opposition defence, Kimmich striking from the penalty spot after a Manuel Akanji handball. Nevertheless, the match was then only played out and the Citizens, after winning 4-1, will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
