Is another football scandal looming? English club Manchester City has been accused of breaching financial fair play, according to TalkSport.

This happened alongside the club’s heyday, which has seen it become a dominant force in English football since the 2010/11 and 2017/18 seasons. The Citizens are alleged to have broken no fewer than 115 financial fair play rules over eight years. And if confirmed, harsh punishment will follow.

The possibility of expulsion from the Premier League or relegation to the second tier is also in play, although former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson cannot imagine such a possibility.

“The scale of the breach is on a completely different level (to Everton or Nottingham Forest). There is a suspected conspiracy over a ten year period. These are allegations of the most serious nature,” said Borson in an interview with TalkSport.

There is also talk, as a possible punishment, of stripping the 2011/2012, 2013/2014 and 2017/2018 titles. The runners-up in those years were Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester United again. The Citizens would therefore lose three of their eight championship titles.

Manchester City eliminated from the Premier League?

However, Borson also states that expulsion is more or less unlikely, but indeed a real threat. And that is if it is proven that Manchester City actually broke the rules of financial fair play. Moreover, this is indeed a “big if”.

“It seems to me highly unlikely that any such behaviour would have occurred over a ten-year periodWith all the people involved, not just the club,” Borson said.

“It will be very difficult for any court or tribunal to suggest (to determine) that this and this number of people acted dishonestly and perjured themselves in doing so,” he added.
